Books Description:

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWS

Never go back—but Jack Reacher does, and the past finally catches up with him. . . . Never Go Back is Lee Child’s new novel of action-charged suspense starring “one of the best thriller characters at work today” (Newsweek).

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces—and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back on Active Duty
Getting a Reacher novel in the mail is a lot like being handed an ice cream cone on a sweltering summer day. It's simply not there for admiring or slowly savouring, you tuck right in and enjoy every lick. And like the cone, "Never Go Back" does not disappoint.

This time, Reacher travels back to his old MP unit to meet its new commander, mainly because he was intrigued by the sound of her voice on the telephone. Once there, he finds that she's been locked up, and he is being brought back on active duty so he can answer to a homicide charge and paternity suit. As always, nothing is quite as it seems, and Reacher has to peel back layer after layer to get to the truth. All while staying one step ahead of the law, drug dealers, and the Army.

I don't know if the Reacher series can get any better, but it certainly isn't getting any worse or showing any author fatigue. The writing is crisp, the pacing brilliant, and the plot is deliciously convoluted and innovative. You simply cannot put this book down, it's that compelling and addictive.

The one weakness is Child's lack of understanding of the U.S. military. Reacher refers to an Army major as "miss", something no recent field grade officer would ever do except as a deliberately provocative insult. He has a base with three checkpoints at the entry and exit. I've never seen a base with more than one entry checkpoint, and only an exit checkpoint during exercises or times of heightened security. Checking everyone's ID and trunk three times on the way off-base is manpower intensive and utterly pointless. There are other things that seem hinky to me, and I think an Army staff officer would point out more flaws. It doesn't ruin the book, but if you're going to write about the military, you owe it to the readers to have your facts straight.

That aside, the book is simply outstanding. The Reacher series clearly has a lot of life left in it, and I'm already looking forward to the next one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Reacher I loved you, man
So hard to reconcile the Reacher in this story with my hero of earlier books. What happened? I can appreciate far fetched scenarios but the fire and the airplane violence....really?
And was there any emotional connection between Turner and Reacher? I didn't read any feelings there. Just hop in the sack and then back to disfiguring the bad guys. Walking away at the end like nothing happened between them? And, who the hell is Turner? Got no real background - her character was flat!
Come on, it was flat, with no logical reason given for the storyline until it was wrapped up on the last page. And, the girl? why even add that dimension if it wasn't going to figure into a future story? Did Reacher really have no emotion to the possibility that Sam was his daughter? He must have thought it was a possibility given her physical attributes ( the other similarities, genetic factors? dumb). It's like he turned into a cartoon one dimensional GI Joe all of a sudden.
If this Reacher had been introduced in the first book of the series; it would have been the last Reacher book I ever read.
Will I buy the next Reacher novel? I won't pre-order and await the release with the enthusiasm I had in the past. I will, however, check the reviews before I consider purchase.
It's a damn shame. And up until now I thought the worst thing that could happen to Reacher was having Tom Cruise in the lead role.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I am not a barbarian"
In The Affair, Jack Reacher did so much wanton killing that I decided to stop following the series, after having read every book. I'm glad I went back to Never Go Back. Jack Reacher is something of a new man in this book. Lee Child goes to some pains to show that Reacher is not just a killing machine. He does "care about people," as his new lover realizes with relief. Perhaps Child saw the criticisms of distressed readers and decided it was time to rehabilitate his tough guy. Anyway, the results are excellent.

Reacher is still pretty feral, but he negotiates with his opponents, if possible, before breaking their arms and noses. He carefully controls at least some of his punches so they won't be lethal. He's able to tell his lover with some justification, "I am not a barbarian." it's a pleasure to watch him rely on his intelligence as much as he relies in his powerful mesomorph physique and lightning reflexes. Reacher's strategic powers shine in this novel.

And while cleaning up Reacher's act a bit, Child still delivers an exciting thriller replete with terrific plot complications.

Basically the plot is built around a scheme of framing a female army officer to stop her from investigating a certain high-level scam. And Reacher gets hit with some trumped up charges as well, to keep him from helping out the female officer.

So we have Reacher teamed up with the very attractive Major Susan Turner, and they make a great team - both clever strategists, both combat-ready.

There's a lot to like in this novel - riveting fight and flight scenes, clever dodges, witty dialog and a rather civilized romance. I read Never Go Back into the wee hours of the morning, because putting it down was not an option.
