Customer Review:

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners
Good book for beginners but anyone buying an expensive camera like the Sony A7 is probably not a beginner. Hence, too much of the book is devoted to basics and not enough to explain thoroughly all of the camera's functions

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for every A7-owner, joy to read every word from a really authentic great photographer, Brian Smith
Brian Smith's recent book gives a great balance between camera techniques, photography, and gorgeous photos. The book is a joy to read; very much like a travel book: journey to photography with the addictive A7. I have an A7 since Christmas 2013, and have been using it every day. I carry my A7 with me everywhere: to work, to parties, to family visits. I am a complete A7-addict (A7-aholic). I have been waiting eagerly this book for months, and I cannot really express how much I like it. I have it with me everywhere along with my A7 set. Some chapters I have read through three or four times; every time I read, I've found new aspects and meanings of the words, new messages of the phrases. Brian Smith is an active member of the Sony E-mount forum on dpreview.com, and he gives tremendous help to less experienced photographers. He has a very pleasant personality (charisma); reading his book and watching his mesmerizing photos convey the enjoyment of photography and life. This is third book I bought on digital photography, and absolutely the best one. Brian Smith is an active user of A7R, which gives weight to his words. He is not just an techno-aficionado jumping ships to publish new techie-books twice every week. He is a professional photographer using A7R, and we fellow A7 owners are terribly lucky that such a great photographer took the time to write this book. If you are an experienced DSLR photographer, you should buy the book, too, since A7 is so much more improved, state-of-the-art, full-frame-mirrorless, incredibly capable still utterly portable camera, that it requires its user should adapt his or her techniques in order to fully exploit the myriads of the features this camera has. I took a 6-month photography course in my city, and the instructors, who were anyway great photographers, had no clue how to use a camera like the A7. It is meaningless to insist using old-style photography practices on A7; an A7 owner should open her/his mind and enjoy the trip of discovery of a new world made possible by Sony A7 and A7R.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read for those new to the A7/R or photography
I have not actually read the downloaded Kindle edition from Amazon, but I purchased the epub from Pearson Press so it should essentially be the same. Brian does a fantastic job as expected and presents materials in an organized, knowledgeable manner. The book starts by providing an in depth overview of the features and capabilities of the A7/R camera, which should be welcome to those new to the mirror less full frame form factor. Brian breaks down features by shooting style and gives a number of valuable tips from a professional's view. The book steps the reader through different shooting styles, progressing from auto and program modes to more complex and finally manual shooting. It covers how to shoot in these modes, what to look out for, and most importantly what compositional elements create great photographs. Two things I loved: First he gives you assignments per chapter. I strongly encourage new shooters to take Brian up on these. It will improve your photography! Second, he provides example photographs with callouts/text concerning then important aspects related to photography. Contrast, leading lines, angle, colors, shapes, all are mentioned strategically. The book rounds out by discussing advanced techniques in manual mode, and covers the wide array of accessories and lens adapters for shooting with the A7/R.

As an experienced A7/R shooter I found benefit in this book from front to back. Most were reminders (always great) with a few real gems I wrote down in my photography notebook to remember every time I shoot. Congrats to Brian on another great piece.
