Books Description:

Photographer, author, and educator Roberto Valenzuela has a proven track record for teaching and explaining difficult concepts to photographers of all skill levels. His remarkable ability to break down complicated ideas into understandable, approachable elements that photographers can truly grasp–and then use their newfound knowledge to improve their photography–made his first book, Picture Perfect Practice, a breakout success.

In Picture Perfect Posing, Roberto takes on the art of posing. For many photographers, after learning to compose an image and even light it properly, a portrait can still easily be a failure if the pose is not natural, elegant, and serving the needs of both the subject and the photographer. Instead of just showing page after page of poses–like most posing books on the market–Roberto actually breaks down the concept of posing by examining the anatomy, starting with the core foundation: the spinal chord and neck. Building from there, Roberto discusses every component of what makes poses work, as well as fail. How should the model hold her hands? Bend her elbows? Position her fingers? Should the model look toward or away from the camera, and why? It all depends on what the photographer wants for the shot, and Roberto discusses the entire process, from the intent of the photographer through the execution of the pose. For those who have been discouraged by an inability to pose their subjects, or who have simply not known where to start in order to "figure it out," Picture Perfect Posing is the essential resource they need to learn how posing truly works, and how they can learn to direct the exact pose they need for the shot they want.

Customer Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! The one book you need to read about posing
If I had to choose one and only one book about posing, Picture Perfect Posing would definitely be my choice! Roberto’s approach is simply brilliant and never have I seen a system that clear and well explained about such a complex element of photography.

This book will teach you the ‘’language’’ of posing and how to use it in each and every situation depending on what you want to achieve. No more remembering poses, no more guessing and no more wondering what to do with each body part.

This will definitely help you step up your game and gain more confidence in front of your clients, whether it is a wedding or a commercial shoot.

I believe that no matter at what level of expertise you are, you can still benefit from this book.

Many thanks to Roberto Valenzula for being so transparent with his techniques and for sharing all this great knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect and to the point!
I loved this book. I purchased it after hearing him speak at WPPI and just knew he was gold. His book is written well, in terms everyone can understand, plenty of examples to illustrate a point, and tips to help you remember things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, now I understand posing
As an aspiring amateur portrait photographer, I have spent hours trying to figure out how to pose people, without having to spend 10 years of daily practice to master it. Most books I have seen will give you the "rules" then immediately tell you how to break them. They just leave me confused. I am left trying to memorize a few poses or doing lots of planning beforehand.

This book explains WHY you do what you do in a way you can understand, and more importantly, remember. Now I finally feel like I might be able to be halfway competent at posing even without tons of experience. In addition, there are comparison photos shown, with method a and method b, you decide what looks best. And there is "homework" in each chapter with photographs for you to practice your new knowledge on, trying to figure out if and how they could have been done in a more attractive, pleasing way.

It's far better to have photos where you can recognize flaws rather than a book full of perfect poses that if I knew how to do, I would not need the book.

I probably won't been needing the plethora of other books I have on posing--just this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is THE BOOK you want to get to finally UNDERSTAND the principles behind posing
Have you ever came across a portrait and something about it grabs your attention? Have you ever came across what you thought was a great picture, but somehow something was just off... but you can't put your finger on it? Once you've read this book, then you WILL KNOW why you like / dislike something. You will finally understand poses. Now Robert himself will tell you that practice is where you need to perfect it and make it second nature, but this is a great start to that.

I've owned Picture Perfect Practice, and it's one of the few photography book that I've gone back and reread multiple times. So when Roberto Valenzuela came out with this book, I knew that I just HAD to get it. Sure enough, my expectations was not just met, but exceeded. Roberto is an excellent teacher, and he gets you not to memorize poses, but to UNDERSTAND the whys behind the PRINCIPLES. He gets you into the whys and hows, not just the whats (where most books often leave you).
If you decide to break those principles, at least you will be doing it consciously, knowing what effect it has on the images you are creating.

If you have any inclination of photographing people, you MUST MUST MUST buy this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
